Behold the New Media

The WSJ had an dialogue between Dale Hoiberg, editor-in-chief of Brittanica, and Wikipedia's Jimbo Wales. I thought it was interesting to see the style it was presented in, almost like Apple's iChat. I wonder if all interviews in the future will be formatted into this form -- it would make it easier to intelligently go over what people say. One of the issues with debate is that people tend to go into canned minispeeches that are prepared beforehand, typically designed to sound good but have no substance. I wonder what the best format is to prevent that - it's a separate problem. Looking at this debate in specific, I don't find it convincing one way or the other -- there are some interesting issues raised, some interesting things to chew on, but by and large, I think it's better to judge the works by what is produced than these discussions. Just as people in love with formal logic often end up reaching conclusions that are silly or worse, this kind of debate won't really decide anything.

Today is another day of working from home (mostly) because I'm waiting for a Fedex package. Grumble.
