One of the things I most fervently believe is an extension of this fantastic quote by Vannevar Bush:

  • A record if it is to be useful to science, must be continuously extended, it must be stored, and above all it must be consulted.

In its original context of facts in science, this is an idea of great beauty. Let us extend it to cultural elements as well: stories, songs, art, philosophy. The constant production, alteration, annotation, churning of intellectual products is as important a social goal as empathy. What makes us more worthwhile than any other existing animal is our mental capacity. Preparing people to use that capacity is self-actualisation of the species.

One decent scientist is worth at least ten saints. One great work of literature is worth at least ten Yeshuas or Mohammads. A human footstep on Luna and human eyes peering deep into space are among the greatest accomplishments of humanity.
