Soup Spot (review)

This was my second try visiting Soup Spot, and my first success.

I've had a hankering for Potato Leek Soup (my favourite soup) for awhile, and I'm also trying to avoid settling entirely into my two main haunts in NYC; Tea Lounge and Yaffa. They're great spots, but NYC is big enough to offer me constant exploration. Soup Spot lists Potato Leek soup on its menu, it's Zagat rated, and has generally fantastic reviews otherwise. Last night, I made it there about 45 minutes before its closing time, but it closed early for some reason, so I moseyed on into Williamsburgh. Tonight, I made it about an hour and a half before closing, and it was still open. Hooray.

Soup Spot is very small. No seating (didn't notice that earlier), so I had to bring the food out with me. They have a huge variety of soups, but apparently they rotate through the menu on the website; no Potato Leek soup for me. I went with a Mushroom soup and a brownie. For such a highly-regarded place, it didn't feel fancy at all; the cook handed me a brown paper bag and out I went. Decided to hang out at Tea Lounge for a bit; stopped to eat it on a bench not far from here.

First pleasant surprise: it came with an apple (not sure why this makes me so happy, but it does). Second surprise: the baguette is a work of art; it has the perfect amount of crunch and soft, has no sign whatsoever of staleness, and had excellent taste. I really enjoyed the soup; it was magnificent. Rich, filling, and made with top-notch ingredients. It may not have been Potato-Leek soup good, but it's as good as Mushroom Soup gets. I haven't tried the brownie yet and will be saving the apple for later today.

If I had to give it a grade, I'd have to give it an A-; the food was excellent, and the chef friendly. The hours being wrong and no notice that not all the soups on the internet menu are available are small minuses on a generally excellent experience. I do intend to eat there again.
